Te Rito Journalism Project
NZME, Whakaata Māori, Newshub and the Pacific Media Network, with financial support from Public Interest Journalism Fund, established a cadetship and development programme called Te Rito Journalism Project.
Te Rito would train, upskill, and mentor a cohort of 15 through NZME, Newshub and Pacific Media; and 10 from Whakaata Māori and Iwi Media.
Through diversity of voice, we wanted to create journalists who reflected the Aotearoa we live in.
Te Rito was to address the critical shortage of reo Māori and Pasifika journalists and cultural awareness within newsrooms.
The inaugural, 12-month programme, started in February 2022.
